Pope Francis Establishes Commission on Protection of Minors / Vatican Radio

At the briefing on Thursday (Dec. 5) alongside the Director of the Holy See Press Office, there participated Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, archbishop of Boston, member of the Council of Cardinals, who gave the following Declaration: ‘Continuing decisively along the lines undertaken by Pope Benedict XVI, and accepting a proposal presented by the Council of Cardinals, the Holy Father has decided to establish a specific Commission for the protection of minors, with the aim of advising Pope Francis on the Holy See’s commitment to the protection of children and in pastoral care for victims of abuse.’” By Vatican Radio — Click here to read the rest of this announcement.

I know SNAP has dismissed this as more talk and no action. However this has been proposed by the Gang of 8 Cardinals and accepted by Francis. It seems to me a good thing to have a commission with real clout whose sole job is to deal with the abuse crisis. Heretofore it has been everybodys job but no one’s primary responsibility.

I have two caveats: 1. This should not delay holding accountable those prelates (At least Mahony, Finn and, probably Nienstadt in the USA) known now to have been derelict in dealing with the crisis. 2. This must not get tangled up in the bureaucracy of all those leaders and organizations OMalley called out as having some involvement. Its fine to touch base and consider suggestions, but not fine to have to wait for clearance from all those guys (and they are mostly all guys.).
